The Chatteris British Legion held their 3rd annual sports on July 22nd 1922 at the ground. There were four open bicycle races, half and one mile handicaps, a three miles scratch and a novices a race over one mile. The local events included a one mile bicycle race. There was a special event in which HW Golden** of East Anglia Cycling Club made an attempt to lower the standing start grass track world record over a quarter of a mile, which stood at 33.2 seconds. The three miles scratch race was for a trophy value 30 guineas and there was a lap prize of two guineas. Admission cost 1s 3d, grandstand 2s 3d.
The event was repeated in 1925. In the three miles scratch race for the Chatteris Legion Sports Challenge Cup, HW Golden was the winner for the third successive time, beating CW Horn++, so made the cup his own property. In the half mile NCU (Eastern Counties) Championship HN Sawyer beat AE Martin.
The July 24th 1926 Legion sports had a record gate and produced several close finishes, it was reported as "One of the best sports meetings in the district for many years." Albert White attempted to beat the World's grass track record for the quarter mile, which stood at 33.2 seconds. Unfortunately the troublesome wind and a bad start put paid to his effort and he returned 34.6s. The three miles open scratch race had a star-studded field, Albert White, the English champion crashed in the sixth lap, Charlie Cole of the Polytechnic won the race and Cyril Horn snatched the lap prize.
The Legion sports ran until 1930 and hosted NCU (Eastern Counties) championship races in 1927 and 1928. At the 1929 sports, FH Wyld, who had won the Murratti cup at Fallowfield the previous week, attempted unsuccessfully to beat the World's grass track record for the quarter mile. This was probable the last bicycle racing to be held at Tuck's Gate.
Following the 1919 Housing Act, the local council identified the area around Tuck's Gate (located at the corner of Wenny Road) as one of four designated locations chosen to build the town's first major council house scheme, with the first land purchased in September 1920.
** Golden was the 1921 Eastern Counties champion over ¼, ½, 1, 5 and 10 miles
